Marchtown was an alternative name for Strathbungo, preferred by the Maxwell landowners. Emma Pollock’s song goes back to this old name, plumping for one of the theories behind the name of the neighbouring village of Crossmyloof. Many place-names in the area are associated with Mary Queen of Scots and the Battle of Langside. Today it also includes Queens Park, one of the city’s great green places. As Victorian Strathbungo developed, the park would still have been farmed and grazed alongside the emerging grand villas, as well as playing host to the likes of the New Year shinty matches between Glasgow and Greenock Gaels
